Buying a used car? A faulty steering rack is a costly headache. Don't get stuck with one. Follow these 3 simple steps to check it yourself.
1.The Visual Check: Look for Leaks
Pop the hood and find the steering rack. Trace the rubber boots on each end. Are they cracked or covered in greasy, black dirt? Grab a flashlight and look for wet, oily fluid leaking from these boots or the main body. Any leak is a major red flag. Walk away.
2.The Static Test: Listen for Noise
With the car parked and engine running, turn the steering wheel all the way to the left and right. Listen carefully. Do you hear a loud whining or groaning from the front? Now, turn the wheel slowly back and forth. Feel for any stiffness, jerky movement, or strange clunking sensations through the wheel. Smooth and quiet is what you want.
3. The Road Test: Feel the Response
Take the car for a drive. On a straight, quiet road, does the car drift or pull to one side without you steering? When you turn a corner, does the steering feel vague or slow to respond? Pay attention when going over bumps—if you hear a clunk from the front, it could be worn internal parts. The steering should feel direct and predictable.
A perfect steering rack is silent, smooth, and leak-free. If you find any of these issues, it's best to consider another vehicle.
