
You turn the wheel, and your car responds. It feels simple, but it's the result of a precise mechanical dance under the hood. At the center of it all is the steering rack.
Think of the steering rack as the translator. It converts the rotating motion of your steering wheel into the linear, side-to-side movement that turns your wheels.
Here’s how it works with the rest of the system:
1.You & The Steering Wheel: It all starts with your input. You turn the steering wheel.
2.The Steering Column: This shaft connects the steering wheel directly to the steering rack, delivering your rotational command.
3.The Pinion Gear: At the end of the steering column, a small gear (the pinion) meshes with a toothed bar inside the steering rack (the rack). As the pinion turns, it pushes the rack left or right.
4.The Tie Rods: Connected to each end of the rack, these are the final link. As the rack moves, the tie rods push and pull the front wheels.
5.The Wheels Turn: The tie rods are attached to the steering knuckles, which physically pivot the wheels to navigate your chosen path.
